PV plants often receive direct or indirect lightning strikes. For this reason, installers are setting lightning / surge protection of the power section (DC & AC).

Sometimes, however, there is a lack or insufficient protection of the sensitive currents of a PV plant.

Sensitive currents in a PV plant are:

  • Communication wires (Ethernet, RS485)
  • Modems, Routers, Switches
  • CCTV cabling
  • Monitors, cameras, recorders
  • Alarms
  • Several sensors

Example 1:
Communication via Ethernet wiring. Inverters are scattered in the PV plant. System consists of a router & switch. You will need to protect the switch as well as the input of each inverter.

Example 2:
Communication via Ethernet wiring. Inverters are placed in a group of 5 in the PV plant. System consists of router & more switches. You will need to protect the switches as well as the input of each inverter.

Example 3:
Communication via RS485 wiring. Inverters are scattered inside the PV plant and are connected in series “In-Out”. System consists of a router & data logger. You will need to protect the serial lines (BUS) as well as the input of each inverter.
